Rear Fog Light Install

I have been searching everywhere trying to find out how to wire my US spec Cabrio taillights to the European pattern with the integrated rear foglight. I finally found a couple resources on the internet that I will be reprinting here (just in case they take the pages down). Of course, use this information at your own risk. I cannot guarantee the validity of their information until I actually perform the surgery myself.

The first lead I had in getting the new wiring scheme was from a personal site of a Golf 3 that had plenty of European mods to it, including the ingrated rear fog. I emailed him and he sent me the links to older instructions of what he had done and had been posted to his site.

It has great pictures and I am preserving his instructions here: GO

The second site was from another private site, this time in Canada. This one closely follows the European lighting. His wiring was based on a European model 1992 1/2 Golf 3 from Italy and the conversion was done to a 1993 Canadian spec (North American) car, in which are very similar to US spec cars.

This one didn't have very many pictures, but there is lots of attention to detail: GO

Front Lights On
Parking Lights On
Brake Lights On
Rear Foglight On
All Lights On
Please excuse the crappy photos, I am experimenting with a free digital camera. You can see why it was free! But at least you get the gist...

Note: 07-10-2000, I had just performed the transformation to European spec tailights this weekend on my own Cabrio, following the procedure in the second link listed above. It was a very simple task, if you understand basic wiring and only took me a couple of hours to do. My only addition to the instructions listed is the VW part number for the wire and connector listed (000-979-126-A) was superceded by part number 000-979-133-A (which they didn't have in stock, but he had 14 of 000-979-133), which I used instead. It works fine.

I went the cut-n-splice route (but used shrink wrap tubing to leave a clean strong connection), except for the headlight switch and the 5-pin connector at position 1 (T5d/1), in which both never had wires and needed the VW parts to make a connection. Otherwise, the instructions above are very accurate. I have also made a Quick Reference visual guide to go along with the installation walk-throughs. Download that in PDF format here.
