Chip Tuning
The first
motor modification I did was adding a performance chip to the
car. Out all the bolt-on performance modifications you can do,
the chip upgrade is one of the most significant improvements over
the factory setup you can buy.
The modification
involves removing the ECU for the car and prying the factory chip
out of the socket and replacing it with the re-tuned chip. A simple
install if you've ever handled electronics, or you can have a
competant shop to the swap in about 15 minutes. The gains are
usually made by an advancing of the ignition and altering of the
fuel-air ratio and engine mapping.
I started
off with the Neuspeed chip based on reputation. While many people
have had good experiences with Neuspeed, I have not. I found their
chip to deliver a marginal performance gain over the factory chip
(at least in my car).
On a visit
to Advanced Motorsport Solutions in Costa Mesa, one day, they
talked me into giving their EPROM a try. So, I went for it. I
was truly amazed! The difference was apparent and immediate. Gains
from 3,000rpm - 5,000rpm. This was definitely by the seat-of-the-pants
test, since I have never dyno'ed it, but the gains were noticeable
none the less.
There are
many manufacturers of tuned chips out there. It can be difficult
to make a choice, if this is your first time. If you ask others
about which chip to buy, it can turn into a religious debate.
Lots of people have very strong opinions when it comes to which
chip is "best". Some of the more vocal are the Garret
chip customers who take any chance they get to promote their chip.
I have never used the Garret chip, so I cannot say one way or
the other who's chip is best. My chip from AMS satisfies my needs.
I have seen
many performance graphs charting the different chips on the market
and they all deliver similar performance gains. My advice would
be to find a company that offers good customer service and a guarantee
on their product. Most of the companies offer a competitive upgrade
price for users of other chips.
You'll want
to use 92 Octane (Premium) grade fuel in your car after upgrading
to a chip to avoid pinging due to the advanced ignition.
